An Appeal

National Convention of Voluntary Organisations

June 2-3, 2008. Mumbai

The role of voluntary sector in various walks of National Life in India appears to be becoming more and more crucial. More than sixty percent of the Government funds earmarked for welfare and development schemes are distributed via the voluntary organisations. While it is true that voluntary sector is playing a major role in the implementation of development schemes, their role certainly is not limited to just that. Policy formulation, mobilizing people for a movement, opinion-making, influencing international politics, as well as research and academic activities are some of the key areas where, rapidly coming under greater influence of the Voluntary Organisations, popularly known as NGOs. Many a time, it is realised that voluntary organisations also try and make an impact upon power politics. Worse, some VOs also try to use voluntary activism indirectly for playing politics.

On the one hand, the influence of the voluntary sector is growing fast while on the other, there are numerous perversions creeping into the same. Nepotism, lack of accountability, increasing incidences of financial irregularities besides dearth of systemic functioning and deteriorating level of integrity amongst the activists and functionaries are fast afflicting the overall credibility of the voluntary sector. In the absence of purity of purpose and commitment to the basics of the science of institution building, the sector is acquiring a negative image.

On this backdrop, the challenges before the voluntary sector are becoming graver. More unfortunately, the discussion about these challenges has not acquired requisite importance in our public discourse.

It is on this setting and with a view to giving impetus to the discussion about -
  • Emerging challenges before the voluntary sector
  • Collective strategy to meet these challenges
