One of the most important facilities at Mhalgi Prabodhini is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Karyakarta Abhyas Kendra (Library). The library has been extending its various services since 1993. It was established as a public library and was recently awarded with B Grade, a prestigious status for a public library, by the Directorate of Libraries, Government of Maharashtra. However, it is not confined to mere a collection of popular titles. On the contrary, the library is striving to develop social, political and cultural awareness among the citizens, to enhance the leadership qualities among the social activists and nationalist and to cater to their information needs.

Objectives:

  • To serve the patrons by satisfying their information requirements and needs.
  • To create awareness about the current socio-economic and political affairs and developments at regional, national and international level among its users.
  • To serve as an research library providing reference, documentation and information services to the research scholars in Social sciences.
  • To provide the sources for continuing and self-education.
  • To collect the classics in Marathi, Hindi and English literature.
  • To acquire and make available the personal collections of the eminent people in the society.

Collection:

The collection has been developed, keeping in view specific aims and objectives. It contains a good collection of books on Hinduism, Hindu nationalism, communism, world politics and economy, Indology (socio-economic and political conditions, history, archeology, civilisation, culture, statistical studies and surveys in the context of India) and numerous contemporary subjects. Exclusive booklets on various topics are also a significant part of this collection. A separate collection of some periodicals like Ekta, Manoos, Samaj Prabodhan Patrika, New Yorker and Seminar is maintained exclusively. The library also has a collection of about 500 audio-video cassettes on various topics, which include, documentaries on various projects, speeches on socio-political subjects and also some feature films. Videotapes of news track and eyewitness are also a part of this collection. It also has a section devoted for personal collections of literary giants and great socio-political leaders. We aim to develop our collection on various topics with the help of valuable suggestions from our members and advisers.

Services:

Besides traditional services of a library like circulation (issue-return), reference and photocopying, following services are also provided by our library.

Internet / E-mail Facility:

Library provides ISDN enabled Internet facility to its users. Library staff can also provide valuable help to the users in retrieving the web documents on the desired topics and subjects.

Audio - Visual Section:

The library has a special audio as well as a video room. Both the rooms can accommodate a maximum 4 persons at a time. The audio room has a high quality audio system with radio and tape facilities. Dubbing, recording and duplicating facilities are also available. The video room has a 21" high quality colour television, VCR, VCP and a CD player. Users can enjoy these facilities by paying Rs 50 as deposit amount and can also carry home the CDs and VCDs.

Membership:

Membership of the library is open to all. It serves two types of members.

  1. Life member
    Membership fee: Rs 1000
    Facilities: A life member can get two books / audio cassettes / CDs and one magazine / video cassette / CD at a time and should return the same within 2 weeks. The member will not be expected to pay deposit for any of the information services.

Working Hours:

The library shall remain open to the public on all working days except on national and gazetted holidays as under
Monday to Saturday : 10 am to 6 pm
Sunday and Holidays Closed

Library Rules:

  • Each prospective member shall give in writing an undertaking to abide by the rules of the library.
  • If the books are not returned on the due dates, an overdue charge Re. 1 per book per day will be charged for the period the books are kept beyond the due date. The librarian shall have the power to remit or reduce such overdue charges.
  • In case any book is lost or damaged by the member, the member shall replace the book or shall pay the cost of replacement. If a book is one of the volumes of a set, the reader may be asked to replace the whole set.
  • Reference books, rare books, unbound periodicals and books on fine arts may not be generally issued, except with the written permission of the librarian.
  • The books may be renewed if the same are not in demand or are not reserved by other readers.
  • If a member does not pay off the library dues, the privilege of borrowing books may be suspended till he deposits the requisite amount.
  • The librarian shall have the power to refuse the issue of a book to any member or to recall any book without assigning any reason or he may grant special permission to any person to use the library.
