- What Is CRID?
-
A fast, reliable and economical system of collecting, sifting and distributing relevant information on a daily basis is hallmark of CRID, one of the several wings of the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini.
Established in 1982, Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini is unique in its character for providing an all-round orientation and training facilities for the voluntary sector activists, the elected representatives, the bureaucrats, the educators and the entrepreneurs. Of late, Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini has spread its activities internationally. Acknowledging the varied achievements of Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini, the former Hon'ble Prime Minister Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, dedicated this institution to the people of India on 6th January 2003.
CRID has over a period, established itself as a centre providing print media clippings collected from mainstream international and national newspapers and periodicals on various important topics.
- How CRID Functions?
-
The CRID subscribes to the print media of all hues and colour. It scans a large number of leading newspapers and periodicals from India and abroad. It highlights the important issues and developments reflected in the print media.
It also compiles research papers, official documents, thematic notes & dossiers and seminar reports occasionally published for the benefit of its subscribers.
The CRID sincerely believes in the democratic values and in the freedom of expression defending the pluralistic and nationalistic nature of our society. The CRID, based in Mumbai, the financial, entertainment, media and academic capital of India, is well equipped to fulfill the above objectives.
- Broader Objectives:
-
- To document the ongoing stages of various developmental processes in social, financial, political, educational, cultural, scientific and health issues to individuals and institutions.
- To co-operate with colleges, universities and research organisations to strengthen themselves to fulfil their objectives.
- To support the advocacy processes by providing updated data on relevant issues.
- To provide baseline data to initiate surveys, studies and experiments.
- To assist the welfare activities of the voluntary sector upholding livelihood issues.
- To increase accessibility and availability of relevant information of lasting importance to the society at large.
- To bridge the growing divide that exists between different segments of society as a result of lack of information on one hand and information explosion on the other.
- Topics: As Many As 260!
-
The CRID provides extensive collection of clippings on 33 wide-ranging topics divided into over 260 subtopics touching more or less all relevant aspects. The CRID will be happy to include any issues specifically requested by the subscriber.
- Lasting Views, Not Temporary News!
-
Data is scanned and compiled daily, according to its relevance. The news, which is dead the next day, is not taken into consideration. However, the news analysis and the follow-up coverage are considered. All statistics having long-term effect, policy decisions and official documents are filed. The columns contributed by veteran journalists, expert comments, special newsletters, exclusive interviews and editorials of significance are all preserved. In addition, news and comments on issues exploding unexpectedly, suddenly and violently, are stored. Surveys, research papers and thematic notes published from time to time are well preserved.
The clippings are cut, pasted and filed everyday. The photocopies of these are mailed to the subscriber as per his requirements.

- The Third Revolution:
-
This is the age of revolutions. But of bloodless revolutions. Isn't it surprising! The colour of revolution is no longer red. It can not be! It is green and white. The green revolution made starving India a food grain exporting country. The white revolution transformed India into the second largest milk producing country in the world. The new revolution, the information revolution, is totally colourless. The earlier two revolutions enriched India materially. The succeeding one, though colourless, is also going to make India intellectually alert. This revolution is knocking at our doors. Let us all welcome it with an open mind. Let us not lag behind.
The Centre for Reference Information & Documentation i.e. CRID, established in 1990, will help you to open the door and to welcome the new revolution. The CRID promises to raise your Information Quotient.
- Growing Need For Such A Centre:
-
- If you aspire to be competent you can not ignore the importance of being well informed and updated in today’s global scenario.
- To whichever field you belong, you have to keep on acquainting yourself with the latest developments in the field of your interest.
- Clarity of views and a positive perspective is essential for success.
- A large number of newspapers and magazines are highlighting qualitatively different, often conflicting perspectives, widening and deepening the field of your interest.
- For self improvement an individual or an organisation needs to see the ever-growing horizon in the respective field of their interest. Timely information proves an important intellectual input to identify the threats and challenges you often face.
- How To Go About It?
-
The information revolution was spread by the waves generated by hundreds of newspapers, magazines, websites and TV channels. Not the scarcity of information but the abundance, nay the explosion of information, is the issue you face. One cannot keep away from this revolution, while getting the relevant and timely information. The CRID promises to help you in this endeavour.
Electronic Media
TV Channels
- Channels, day and night, telecast a large variety of news, interviews, panel discussions, debates as well as exclusive reporting of the developments. Being time consuming and costly, it is very difficult, though not impossible, to record and preserve all that the channels telecast.
- The channels cannot be quoted as a reliable source for reference.
- The channels are tempted to glamorise and sensationalise the information to make it catchy. Obviously they fall prey to either cut-throat competition or to commercial constraints. Total Rating Percentage (TRP) is their Nirvana.
- The programmes are designed and telecasted looking solely at the TRP. As a result you suffer. Their profit maximising approach, dominated by market considerations, does not serve your interests.
- The most prominent drawback of the channels is the inherent inability to provide you with printed and authentic references. All what you see vanishes instantaneously in the air, adding to your anxiety. You remain empty handed. Do you want to be so?
- The timing of the telecast does not always suit your schedule.
Websites
- Plenty of websites provide you with varied options. But surfing is time consuming.
- Problems like network connectivity, server problems, speed and the configuration of your system may hinder your pursuit.
- Your long endless surfing seldom enriches you with enough data.
- Viewing, reading, analysing thousands of websites on a 14-inch monitor is not a worthwhile mode of learning.
Print Media
- Ultimately print media has no option.
- There are hundreds of national and vernacular dailies and thousands of periodicals.
- The often-neglected vernacular press contributes to the information world with its regional, local and subaltern concerns.
- The print media contributes amply to contemporary international, national, regional and local social-political, cultural, financial and economic issues.
- But they comment on or put forward views, which sometimes are coloured with their respective ideological, religious or any other background. At times, their perceived market threats and readership compulsions compel them to dish out colourful and picturesque gossip columns.
- Some publications focus only on their cherished viewpoint such as gender, class, caste, tribe, religion, ideology and occupation. They visualise and analyse the world around keeping in mind the particular goals they strive to achieve. Yet, this cannot be neglected.
- But there are a few committed groups that bring out booklets and leaflets, which however have a limited reach. Still, one cannot ignore these publications. At times, their editorials, comments, studies and data help to get a total picture.
- Subscribing for the entire international, national, regional, and local print media is not possible, rather not economical. Is it advisable to spend the time and money needed to read all this? Perhaps not.
Then how to remain well informed and updated? The CRID promises you to find an answer.
