Water Governance
Governance is the exercise of economic, political and administrative authority to manage a country's affair at all levels. It comprises the mechanism, process and institutions through which citizens and groups articulate their interests, exercise their legal rights, meet their obligations and solve their differences (United Nations Development Program 2001.)
Water Governance refers to the range of political, social, economic and administrative systems that are in place to develop and manage water resources and the delivery of water services at different levels of the society. (Global Water Partnership 2002.)



Mission
To raise awareness of water issues among decision-makers and the general public in order to foster the political will, necessary to achieve the targeted goal of 'WATER FOR ALL' and truly making WATER, EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS.



Objectives
  • To generate political commitment to the national cause of water through the process of dialogue and building capacities of elected representatives at all levels, in the issues pertaining to the water sector.
  • To develop various training modules especially for elected representatives explaining governance issues in water sector and building consensus on best practices.
  • To establish a state-of-the-art water resource centre, documenting innovative/alternative action plans and conducting research in the water sector, useful for professionals, academics and the society at large.



Structure and Funding Sources
Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini's training complex at Bhayander, an extended suburb of Mumbai, is the office of Vilasrao Salunkhe Chair. A fulltime researcher will help to carry out the said objectives and would be mainly responsible for training and research activities.

A panel of advisors comprising experts in social, technical, economic and environment aspects of the water sector is available for guidance.

Accurate Group of Industries, Pune has committed the initial funding. The managing committee of the chair will approach various national and international donor agencies for future plans. Like-minded individuals/institutions interested in the activities of the chair can contribute in cash/time input.
